July 2, 1992 was my fifth birthday, and the day my father lost his job. John Crosbie, the Minister of Fisheries, told us in the north that we couldn't fish anymore. It was only supposed to be a two-year moratorium, and it was only supposed to affect those of us in northern Newfoundland and southern Labrador. The two years passed, however, and the cod stocks were just as low as ever. Fisheries had been shut down all over the province, and the length of the moratorium was changed to "indefinite."

A few feet behind the small crowd gathered in front of the stage for a late-June concert at Knickerbockers in Lincoln, Chris Buford mans the soundboards for the band, Carbon Leaf. He is one of only two crew members for the five-piece Virginia-based rock group. The 30-year-old Buford is the band's stage manager, lighting director and monitor engineer. While Clif Hutchinson, the band's tour manager and sound engineer, mixes the sound the audience hears, Buford mixes the sound the band hears in their earpieces.
